Bariatric Nutrition

India is following a trend of other developing countries that are steadily becoming more obese. Unhealthy, processed food has become much more accessible following India's continued integration in global food markets. Apart from changed dietary habits Indians are genetically susceptible to weight accumulation especially around the waist which is a risk for Diabes and dislipidemia etc.

According to the NFHS-3 (National Family Health Survey ) data, 12 % of Males and 16 % of females suffer with obesity in India and in our state of Andhra Pradesh 17.3 % of males and 22.7% females suffer with obesity. When conservative strategies such as dieting, behavior modification, and exercise do not produce effective weight loss outcomes, bariatric surgery remains a viable option for weight reduction.

Benefits of bariatric surgery includes a marked improvement of debilitating chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, obstructive sleep apnea, and obesity, thereby extending life expectancy and enhancing quality of life. The bariatric procedures basically decrease the size of the stomach thereby decreasing the amount of food that can be consumed at one time and inducing early satiety or bypassing the segments of the gastro intestinal tract (duodenum and Jejunum), thereby decreasing the secretary and absorptive surface area necessary for nutrient utilization and metabolism. Intake of recommended amount of calories by including different food groups helps to balance the all other nutrients in the diet.

In bariatric surgery the quantity of food and calories are restricted so micro nutrient deficiency is expected after surgery so also modification of the gastrointestinal tract affects absorption; the research suggests that bariatric surgery patients are at risk for deficiency of micronutrients especially of vitamins B12, folate, A, D, along with the trace minerals iron, selenium, zinc, and copper. Over-the-counter multivitamin and mineral supplements do not provide adequate amounts of certain nutrients such as vitamin B12, iron, or fat-soluble vitamins and patients will require additional doses of prophylactic supplementation life-long to maintain optimal micronutrient status.
