Family Nutrition Course 

  Traditional dietary habits have replaced with various food items across the world and food has moved from kitchen to industry which has influenced our life style. Most of our present diseases have the roots of bad dietary habits. Unless we are aware about the basics of food & nutrition, we may believe all the claims of the food industry, which may not be true. So it is essential to have comprehensive knowledge about Present scientific guidelines with the wisdom of traditional practices. 

  In a family, every family member is unique and has different nutritional needs, each individual's needs should be considered in the family nutrition plan. For instance, in a family with one child; may be a pricky eater and one eldely person who has food restrictions, where food has to be balanced.

 

Our objective is to promote helthy dietary guidelines for the whole family.

Module One:

 

1. Why we need to eat healthy: is food only source of Fuel? Or is it a nutritents? or is it medicine. This module deals with importance of food & How to prepare healthy, tasty food.

 

2. Energy balance: Exercise & Calories: maintain ideal body weight is the simplest way to prevent many diseases. This module discuss about  energy expenditure in various forms and the reasons for the accumulation of fat.

 

3. Naturopathy & ayurveda prospective of food and cooking: Naturopathy maintains that the body can heal itself if it is given the right circumstances and conditions. A range of treatments or therapies are used to stimulate the body’s own healing powers or ‘vital force’.

According to Ayurveda food is medicine and medicine is food. Eating correctly is the most important aspect of Ayurvedic life-style in both the short term and the long term. What is so-called ‘correct’ diet depends on the basis of individual i.e.  As the saying goes ‘one man’s meat is another man’s poison’. Different foods suit different people.

4. Festivals, Prayars & Prashad: In India, almost every month we celebrate one festival or whole of one month is a festival like, Ramhjan and Karthika Maasam". Each festival has its own sepcial diet, most of the prashad's or the Ramhjan diet guidelines have  lot of scientific basis and significance.

 

4. Indian spices, masalas & health: have you realized that half of the world was discovered in search of spices!! Every day Masalas we use in our kitchen has curative, protective and curmative (i.e enhancing digestion) properties. The common belief is that spicy food is bad for health, but right spices in right combination not only protects health but also enhances taste.

 

5. Minimize nutrient losses: even highly nutritious food if not cooked properly, most of the nutrients are lost. There are various simple ways which can enhance nutrient absorption and increase the quality of the food for e.g right combination of cereals & pulses will improve the quality of protein. Right cooking methods will avoid nutrient losses.

 

6. Food advisements; Facts or Fiction: do you know that most of the claims of food industry or half facts? The advertisements provide misinformation and disinformation. Right information will be provided, how to read food labels & how to assess the advertisement claims.
