Rice is an ancient, sacred, benevolent and nourishing
cereal. It provides more than one-fifth of the calories
that the world consumes.
In many cultures, rice is synonymous with food.
Rice is the staple food for more than one half of
global population and especially for south Indians.
Without rice, a meal is not considered to be a complete
meal but a snack.
Why unpolished rice?
-
Rice is the only food consumed regularly in adequate
quantities among all age groups and by all socio
economic groups of people.
-
Rice has better amino acid and soluble fiber content than wheat
-
It is very rich in B complex vitamins which are so important to metabolise the carbohydrates
-
It is rich in carotene content
-
It is a rich source of Iron. Unpolished rice contains 3 mg of iron. For the typical south Indian eater who consumes around 250- 300 gm of rice , if it is consumed in the form of unpolished rice, around 6-9 mg of iron can be provided with unpolished rice at no extra cost, preparation, or effort. It is expected that in rural people consume around 600 gm of rice per day that means almost 1/3rd of their iron requirement can be met by just consuming unpolished rice.

The question may come about bio availability, even if it is less bio available, in comparison with animal foods, regular intake of unpolished rice helps to contribute to iron stores in the body. Even for infants rice is the first weaning food so it helps to build up the body stores of iron in children. with the intervention of regular Iron folic Acid (IFA) tablets the anemia rate has been on raise, so food based regular contribution of iron in the diet will be helpful.
